During the seven-day mission (August 30-September 5, 1984), the crew successfully activated the OAST-1 solar cell wing experiment, deployed three satellites (SBS-D, SYNCOM IV-2 and TELSTAR 3-C), operated the CFES-III experiment, the student crystal growth experiment, and performed photography experiments using the IMAX motion picture camera. Mission specialist Judith A. Resnik's next flight was aboard the Space Shuttle 51-L mission, the ill-fated flight of the Challenger, which exploded 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986, killing Dr. Resnik and her six colleagues.
