NELLIE "SWEET NELL" STEWART
Signature of the actress beloved in Australia as "Sweet Nell"
Signature: "Nellie Stewart", 3x1 affixed to 4½x1½ sheet. Clipped from a document dated November 12 (no year). Australian singer and actress Nellie Stewart (1858-1931), known to Australians as "Sweet Nell" and "Our Nell", performed in operettas of the 1880's, including most of the principal Gilbert and Sullivan female roles, and also as "principal boy" in many pantomimes. Stewart sang the welcoming anthem when the Prince of Wales visited Australia to open its first federal parliament in 1901. She also performed in Britain and North America. Classic opera, including a role in Gounod's Faust, put a lasting strain on her voice, so that many of her later roles were non-singing ones. After a period of relative inactivity in the 1890's, she appeared in her two most famous roles in the new century: Sweet Nell of Old Drury (1902) and Sweet Kitty Bellairs (1909). She continued acting until the end of her life, known for convincing portrayals of much younger women. (She starred in a revival of Sweet Nell when she was nearly 70.) Toned. Lightly soiled. Faint stains. Irregularly cut. Top left corner of signature torn. Otherwise, fine condition.
