PETER NERO and PEGGY NERO
The Neros send a letter of "thank you" and friendly jest to Phyllis Diller in
1981
Typed Letter Signed: "Peter Nero" and "Peggy Nero", 1
page, 8½x11. Encino, California, 1981 November 16. On his pictorial
letterhead to comedienne and actress Phyllis Diller, Los Angeles.
Begins: "Dear Phyllis". In full: "We received your
postcard picturing the Casa de Ernest Hemingway in Key West. How come none of my
records were shown? Sincerely yours". Typed postscript signed:
"PN." In full: "P.S. - I hope you understood my 'thank you'
letter to you, where I chided you about my records. It was strictly in jest. I
never did get a chance to thank you for the line drawing which has already
been framed and is hanging in between my Picasso and Miro. I was going to
hang it in my Rolls but visibility is already partially blocked by my Monet and
Valasquez. Thanks for thinking of us and hope to see you again soon. Love".
Classical and jazz pianist, composer and conductor PETER NERO (born
Bernard Nierow in 1934) has built an impressive career as a Pops conductor,
arranger and composer. He has received two Grammy Awards (he was
nominated ten times) as well an Emmy Award for his participation in the
NBC special, S'Wonderful, S'Marvelous, S'Gershwin. Nero, who has been the
Music Director of the Philadelphia-based Philly Pops Orchestra since
1979, has performed throughout the world in some of the most prestigious concert
halls, including Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall in London and
the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He has recorded 67 albums, including the
million-selling Summer of '42, and has been named the world's "Number One
Instrumentalist" by "Cashbox" magazine. Nero's early association with RCA
Records produced 23 albums in eight years, while his subsequent move to Columbia
Records resulted in a million-selling gold single and album. Among Nero's long
list of honors are four Honorary Doctorates, the International Society of
Performing Arts Presenters Award for "Excellence in the Arts" and the
prestigious Distinguished Arts Award. He is also included on two historic
walks of fame - one in Philadelphia and one in Miami. Comedienne PHYLLIS DILLER (1917-2012), known for her outrageous
appearance, zany outfits, distinctive laugh and a stand-up act that featured
frequent references to her fictional husband, "Fang", and zingers about her sex
appeal and numerous plastic surgeries, got her big break in March 1955 (at
age 37), when she debuted at San Francisco's Purple Onion club. A subsequent
appearance on The Tonight Show hosted by Jack Paar launched her
national career, which got a big boost after Bob Hope saw Diller in a
Washington, D.C. club. A favorite of the comedian, Diller would appear in
three of Hope's films and 23 of his TV specials. Diller, who recorded her
first comedy record album in 1959, took her groundbreaking "funny hausfrau" act
to nightclubs and television variety shows and specials and she also appeared on
the big screen. Her feature film credits include Splendor in the Grass
(1961), The Fat Spy (1966), Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number! (1966),
The Sunshine Boys (1975) and The Silence of the Hams (1994), and
she provided the voice of the Queen in A Bug's Life (1998). By 2000, the
comedienne, who had trained as a concert pianist before her marriage (1939-1965)
to Sherwood Anderson Diller, had appeared as a piano soloist with 100
symphony orchestras across the U.S. Despite retiring from nightclub/stage
tours in May 2002 at the age of 84, Diller continued to make films
(Motorcross Kids, 2004; Forget About It, 2005) and occasionally
appear on TV programs, including two episodes of 7th Heaven (2002, 2003)
and a guest shot on The Wayne Brady Show (2004). Lightly creased with
folds, not at signatures. Fine condition.
