ROBERT RICE REYNOLDS
Robert Rice Reynolds signed this letter, typed to an autograph hunter on U. S. Senate stationery, in 1937.
Typed letter signed "Robert R. Reynolds" as a U. S. Senator in blue ink.1 page, 7¾x10¼, on stationery of the U. S. Senate Committee on Military Affairs. Jan. 27, 1937. Addressed to Mr. Gordon B. Cronheim, Brooklyn, New York. In full: "My dear Mr. Cronheim: I have you letter of the26th before me in which you request my autograph and I am pleased to send the same herewith to you. With kindest regards and assuring you it is a pleasure to hear from you and to serve you whenever I can do so, I am, Sincerely yours,". Rice (1884-1963) was a Democratic U. S. Senator from North Carolina (1932-1945). Flamboyant and a veteran of five marriages, Reynolds entered office during the Great Depression after a populist campaign that portrayed his opponent Cameron Morrison as an out-of-touch plutocrat. He initially supported the New Deal, but became a pro-business conservative as his campaign wore on. He also split with Roosevelt on foreign policy, challenging his claims that Adolf Hitler was a threat to the U. S. and being the only senator to vote against the Lend-Lease Act of 1941. Rice embraced fascism and anti-Semitism. He founded the ultra-right wing Vindicators Association in 1939 and was associated with American Nazis, fascists and anti-Semites, including Father Charles Coughlin. Lightly toned and creased. Light tear at top edge. Staple holes in top left corner. Folded thrice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
