SAMUEL LOVER
A letter from the writer lamenting about House Agents and slippery
applicants
Autograph letter signed: "Samuel Lover", in black ink, 1 page,
4½x5¼. In full: "Very long correspondence to go through this day all
about House Agents (damn them) and slippery applicants (skin them) and so the
last minute for posting letters is arrived and I must "Shut up", Yours, Dear
Friend, Very sincerely". Samuel Lover (1797-1868) was an Irish
novelist, songwriter and painter. Being privately educated in his native
Ireland, Lover desired to work in the arts, and fled his father's
stockbroking business to take residence in London, England. He took up many
practices, but excelled in painting, mostly painting portraits and miniatures.
In addition to painting, he took up writing and compoing, most notably writing
"Rosy O'More" (1826), which was also developed into a novel and play. His
other works include a successful novel titled Handy Andy (1842).
As he grew older, his eyesight began to fail and he abandoned painting to
focus on writing and entertaining, reading his writings with much popularity
in Great Britian and the United States. Irregularly cut. Surface creases. Normal
mailing folds. Bottom and left edge frayed. Corners slightly worn. Lightly
soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
