JAMES T. BRADY
Handwritten, signed letter from Brady to an associate saying that he has "engaged the house" and that tickets and posters should be made as soon as possible
Autograph letter signed: "J.T. Brady", 1p, 5¼x8¼ inlaid to 8x9½-inch sheet. To F.C. Wemyss, Esq. No place, 1857 April 23. In full: "Tuesday is fixed. I have engaged the house. Brougham & you will arrange (if you please) as to form of tickets, advertisements, posters &c. I have written to Brougham on the subject. The announcement should be made in the papers at once. Excuse my giving you so much trouble." BRADY was legal counsel in 52 murder trials resulting in 51 acquittals. The unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Governor of New York in 1860, he refused Tammany's offer of Mayor of New York City in 1861. Lawyer James T. Brady (1815-1869) gained national prominence for his notorious clients and murder cases. In 1859, he used the novel defense of temporary insanity in successfully defending Congressman Daniel E. Sickels after Sickels killed Philip Barton Key, son of Francis Scott Key, whom he had accused of having an affair with his wife. JOHN BROUGHAM was a noted actor-playwright. The tickets refer to a dinner Brady has planned. Vertical stain runs along blank left margin. Erased notations (unknown hand) at upper right corner. Multiple folds. Horizontal fold underlines signature. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
