ROBERT E. LEE The pilot sends this letter in response to an admirer requesting a photograph! Typed Letter Signed: "Robert E Lee.", 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1971 April 15. To Mr. Richard Calow, North Arlington, New Jersey. In full: "Thank you very much for your letter of March 16 and your request for the enclosed photograph. I am pleased to learn of your great interest in early aviation. As one of its pioneers, I feel privileged to witness its very great development from the Wright Brothers' first flight through advent of the present Jumbo jet era. In reply to your request for details of my early pilot training...I was a member of the Wrights' first graduating class at Simms Station in 1915 and am a member of the Early Birds organization as one of the pilots who received a license before 1916. I served as commanding officer of the 47th Aero Squadron which saw active duty in France during World War 1. During recent years I have been retired but am still an avid reader and fan of aviation in all its phases. I trust you are feeling well this season and thank you for writing me. Best wishes to you, Mr. Calow. Most Sincerely". Robert E. Lee, a member of the Wright brothers' first graduating class at Simms Station in 1915, was also a member of the "Early Birds", an organization of pilots who received their flying licenses before 1916. During WWI, he was commanding officer of the 47th Aero Squadron, which saw action in France. [Photograph not present.] Creased with normal mailing folds. Corners creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
