Kennedy Space Center, October 3, 1985. Space shuttle mission STS-51J, the
21st orbital flight and thefirst flight of Atlantis, was launched
the Kennedy Space Center on October 3, 1985 and returned to Edwards Air Force
Base on October 7. This Defense Department mission carried a
classified payload, believed to include two communication satellites.
Mission Commander KAROL J. "BO" BOBKO was making his third space flight,
while Mission Specialist 2 ROBERT L. STEWART was in orbit for the second
time. First-time space travelers were Pilot RONALD J. GRABE, Mission
Specialist 1 DAVID C. HILMERS, and Payload Specialist WILLIAM A.
