Typed Letter signed: "Nelson A. Rockefeller" as Governor, 1 page, 7x10. Albany, New York, 1965 September 21. On official letterhead to Miller Moore, Bankers Trust Company, New York, N.Y. In full: "On Thursday, October 21st, Mrs. Rockefeller and I look forward to entertaining the members of the Governor's Club at cocktails and a buffet supper, at the Executive Mansion in Albany. This will give us an opportunity to discuss some of our Statewide programs and the outlook for the future of the Empire State. Because of your busy schedule, I wanted to advise you of this event well in advance, in the hope that you can arrange to attend. Cocktails will be at six o'clock and the buffet at seven. I hope very much that you can join us on this occasion and would appreciate your advising Miss Diane Van Wie, at the Executive Chamber, Albany, whether you can attend. Sincerely". Date receipt stamp and pencil underlining (unknown hand). Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller (1908-1979), the grandson of John D. Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He had secured Platform assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the nomination in 1960.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as VP from 1974-1977. Rockefeller died a billionaire, and yet "Rockefeller Republican" was a term used to describe liberal Republicans.
