ANDRÉ TCHAIKOWSKY
The Polish-born composer signs his name with a sentiment on this blue sheet of paper
Autograph sentiment signed: “With all best wishes/Andre Tchaikowsky” in blue ink. 4¾x3½. André Tchaikowsky (1935-1982) was a Polish composer and pianist. Raised in a Jewish family, he was forced to flee during the Holocaust and then was taken to a Polish concentration camp during the Warsaw uprising. Having begun learning piano at the age of four, he continued to study in Paris, Brussels and back in Poland. He performed many recitals in multiple countries. Tchaikowsky's greatest passion was composition though. He wrote several compositions including “Sonata for clarinet and piano, Op. 1”, “First String Quartet in A major, Op.3”, “Second String Quartet in C major, Op. 5” and a setting of Shakespeare's Seven Sonnets for voice with piano. He began work on an opera, a setting of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. He also made several recordings of his work for the EMI label. Tchaikowsky requested that his skull be used as a theater prop after he had died. His skull was used for the first time in the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2008 performance of “Hamlet”. Edges irregular. Corners have adhesive residue. Horizontal crease across center. Ink is faint in places but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
