RAFAEL JERONYM KUBELIK
The conductor signs on this card in blue ink, dated 1965
Signature: "Rafael Kubelik/18-11.1965" in blue ink.Pencil notation in bottom left corner and on verso in unknown hand. 5x3 card with 1¾x1¾ b/w magazine photo affixed. Kubelik (1914-1996) was a conductor known for his frequent guest appearances with a number of major orchestras. Kubelik had a tendency to be forced from his conducting jobs. He was a conductor at the Czeck Philharmoic from 1936 to and 1939 and from 1942 to 1948, the second period during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. He reportedly had to spend several months of 1944 in hiding after clashes with the Nazis. Kubelik fled Czechoslovakia for good in 1948 after the Communist takeover and settled in Switzerland. He was principal conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1950 to 1953, when he was forced to resign over planned staff changes and the incorporation of modern compositions. Kubelik was also music director at the Covent Garden Opera (1955-1958), principal conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (1961-1979) and musical director of the Metropolitan Opera (1973-1974). Lightly toned and soiled. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise, fine condition.
