THE INK SPOTS: JIM NABBIE, KING DRAKE, GREGORY CORNELL and BILLY BYERD
Printed b/w publicity photo by KNS Associates of the Ink Spots, signed by five-decade member Jim Nabbie with King Drake, Gregory Cornell and Billy Byerd
Photograph signed "King Drake", "Gregory/Cornell", "Sincerely/Jim Nabbie" and "Best Wishes/Billy Byerd" in blue ink. B/w printed photograph, 8½x11 overall, 7½x8½ image, one surface. Captioned: "Jimmie Nabbie's/Ink Spots". Publicity photo by KNS Associates, Inc. of New York City. This is a later incarnation of the Ink Spots. It includes long-standing member JIM NABBIE, who copyrighted the Ink Spots name and, until his death, selected almost all of the band's members. THE INK SPOTS were originally formed in 1931 and performed until 1964, and they greatly influenced later generations of black male musical groups and the doo-wop genre. Their hits include If I Didn't Care, I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire and Don't Get Around Much Anymore. None of the original Ink Spots survive. However, Nabbie, a group member from 1945 until his death in 1992, trademarked the Ink Spot name in the 1950s to fend off imitators and selected almost all current members. The group continues to perform and remains faithful to the close harmonies that generated three decades of hits. Lightly toned, soiled, foxed and soiled. Missing top right corner. Light tear in top edge. Light dent in top left corner. Otherwise in fine condition.
