Quebec pianist and composer Wilfrid Pelletier (1896-1982) - sometimes spelled Wilfred - won the Prix d'Europe music competition in 1915. With war raging in Europe and opportunities few in Canada, he began a long affiliation with New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1917, as rehearsal pianist. His duties at the Met steadily expanded to include conductor and artistic director. He hosted the radio program Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air. Refocusing his efforts in his native Canada, he helped found the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and undertook a number of projects designed to promote operatic and classical music in Canada, including youth concerts and music conservatories. He conducted many recordings featuring Met signers under the title World's Greatest Operas. In 1978, the octogenarian was helped to the stage to conduct one number at a Montreal concert in his honor.
