EDWARD M. SHEPARD
Signature of the reform Democrat who ran for Mayor of New York with Tammany's
blessing
Signature: "Edward M. Shepard", irregularly trimmed 3¼x¾ slip. Edward
Morse Shepard (1850-1911) was a New York lawyer, forestry commissioner and
chairman of Brooklyn's Civil Service Commission (1888-1890). As
counsel to the New York City Rapid Transit Commission, he helped negotiate
construction of the New York subway. A reform Democrat, he had played a key
role in prosecuting the corrupt Coney Island police chief, but he ran -
unsuccessfully - for Mayor of New York with the endorsement of the Tammany
Hall machine in 1901. He chaired the Trustees of City College from 1904
until his death. Shepard wrote a biography of President Martin Van Buren (1888).
