J.D. SALINGER Exceedingly rare handwritten letter, instructions to his maid, signed by Salinger in 1989. Items autographed by the reclusive Salinger are very seldom offered for sale! This one offers unique insight into the author's frame of mind and personality. Exceedingly rare ALS: "J.D. Salinger", 1 page, 8½x11. No place but probably Cornish, New Hampshire, 1989 March 12. On his JSD monogrammed stationery to Mary. He tells her that before she leaves for her vacation she should do all her errands so that he would not have to be bothered with those activities, thanking her in advance. As many collectors are well aware, J.D. Salinger (1919-2010) was extremely guarded about his personal life, so much so that he sought injunctions against authors and autograph dealers attempting to publish his letters. J.D. Salinger's first novel, The Catcher in the Rye (1951) immediately became a Book-of-the-Month Club selection and won huge international acclaim. It still sells about 250,000 copies annually. No place, December 17, n.y. To "Dear Ballou", in full: "I had intended to acknowledge your good letter, and then didn't because we were subjected to a maddening tragedy. For it developed that Tillie had been given ground glass. It took her two weeks to die of it and we only knew what it was after she was dead. It made me very said and quite tired. I gave her salt injections every fifteen minutes for almost sixty hours. No chance of knowing who did it of course as I might get a little national publicity for an ax murder. I don't know whether you celebrate Christmas. If you do I hope it's a good one. We shot Santa Clause and are having him for dinner. His skin is pretty good too if the hair doesn't slip. By the way (not by the way at all of course) Mc & O in a letter of the middle of November, said a check would be forthcoming on the first of December. Can it be that this has been lost in the mail.
