FITZ-GREENE HALLECK
Rare signature from the "American Bryon" poet
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours truly/Fitz-Greene Halleck", 4¾x2¼ affixed to a 5x2¾ card. Sometimes called the "American Byron" for his poetic works, Fitz-Greene Halleck (1790-1867) wrote to much popularity for most of his 30 year writing career. Known for his satires of New York society, one of Halleck's most popular poems was "Fanny", which initially sold for 50¢ a copy but quickly sly rocketed to $10 a copy. He often wrote in collaboration with fellow author Joseph Rodman Drake, who was often believed to be a homosexual love interest to Halleck, though Drake showed no signs of interest in Halleck. By 1830, Halleck had become well known in society for his poetic works, which may have aided in his employment as private secretary to John Jacob Astor. He served Astor for several years, acting as his cultural tutor, and was later appointed as one of the original trustees of the Astor Library. In 1849, the writer retired to a rather private life in his hometown, only occasionally publishing works, with his last being the 1867 "Young America". Toned. Adhesive residue on above top margin of signature. Raised marking on left margin from emblem under signature sheet. Slight surface creases. Edges slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
