J. C. PENNEY
He types and signs a 1956 letter concerning his articles on advertising
Typed Letter signed: "J. C. Penney", 1 page, 8½x11. New York City, 1956 June 12th. On personal letterhead. To: "Mr. M. E. Brown, Purchasing Agent," In full: "Thank you for your letter of June 8th, and for your thoughtfulness in sending me copies of the Clover Business Letter for April and May. There is much in these periodicals of your company's with which I agree. Believing that you also will find them of interest, I am enclosing reprints of two talks I have made rather recently which may add to your reading pleasure: 'Competition' and 'One Retailer's View of Advertising.' With my best wishes, Sincerely". James Cash Penney (1875-1971), who opened his first store in 1902 in Wyoming, had a chain of 34 stores generating sales of $2 million by 1912. The following year, his Golden Rule stores were incorporated as J.C. Penney, Inc., which moved its operations to New York City to be closer to major suppliers in 1914. Penney, who semi-retired in 1946, assumed the title of Honorary Chairman. Penny contributed both articles and financial support to the Christian Herald magazine. Today, there are approximately 1,100 J.C. Penney stores employing more than 290,000 associates in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico. Normal mailing folds. Lightly stained. Edges lightly worn. Ink note (in unknown hand) at bottom left corner. Creased on left side. Pencil note in unknown hand on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
