Autograph Letter Fragment Signed: "Matthew Arnold", 3¾x1½, cut from letter. Ten words in Arnold's hand above signature. The foremost literary critic of his age, English Victorian poet Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1857-1867. Noted for his literary and social attacks on contemporary tastes and manners, he wrote both meditative poetry and notable essays, including "The Function of Criticism at the Present Time" (1865) and "The Study of Poetry". Slightly soiled. Irregularly cut, chipped at lower right blank corner. Mounting remnant on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
