ROSCOE TURNER
Outstanding air racer of the 1930s.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Lois/with best wishes/Roscoe Turner". Sepia, 8x10. In 1919, Turner and a partner formed the Roscoe Turner Flying Circus and for five years they put on death-defying performances. After a year in Hollywood and a job as a movie stuntman and actor in Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels as a dashing British airman, he helped organize Nevada Airlines in 1929, operating between Los Angeles, Reno and Las Vegas. After movie star Bebe Daniels christened his four Lockheed planes, he converted one into a racy showpiece and proved transcontinental passenger service was practical by flying it from Los Angeles to New York with four passengers aboard. In the 1930s, Turner was one of the most successful air racers in the world, winning the Bendix, Thompson, Clifford Henderson and Allegheny-Ludlum Trophies and setting numerous world records. The early aviator is a member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame for "outstanding contributions to aviation by his participation in early commercial aviation and involvement in air racing leading to the technical advancement in design and performance of high speed aircraft and engines". Tip of lower right blank corner missing. Lightly creased (not touching signature). Slightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
