7x2, affixed to 7½x2¼ piece of cardstock. Sarah Trimmer (1741-1810)
was an 18th-century writer and children's literature critic, best known for
her extensive educational reforms. The mother and teacher of her own twelve
children, Trimmer's causes were very personal, and as a high church Anglican,
were also very conservative. Promoting religious morality and the Church of
England, she separated herself form "lower class" literature (such as chapbooks)
and irrational stories (such as fairy tales), and criticized any displays of
death or sexuality in children's literature. An avid philanthropist, she
opened several Sunday and charity schools, which she took care to be separated
by gender. A writer herself, Trimmer's most well-known work is Fabulous
Histories (1786), as well as her children's literature periodical
The Guardian of Education (1802-1806); she also wrote several
textbooks and instructional manuals to help women begin their own schools.
