CHICO VEJAR
The boxing favorite and actor from the 1950s signs this black and white publicity photograph with an inscription to a fan
Inscribed printed photograph signed in ink: “For Bill/Dutcher/Health &/Happiness/in 2009 &/in the/future!/Chico Vejar/1/12/09” in black ink. 8x10. Chico Vejar (b. 1931) is a retired American professional boxer. He had his first professional fight on March 25, 1950. His aggressive style and sense of dignity made him a favorite during boxing's Golden Age, when fights were televised every Wednesday and Friday night. Vejar never won a title, but he won 93 fights, lost just 20 and had draws in 4. Vejar studied drama in school and as a result of his popularity as a boxer was offered two movie roles in 1950's films, World in my Corner (1956) and The Midnight Story (1957). He was also once asked to recite lines from Hamlet on live television before a fight. After retirement he served as a volunteer board member with the United Cerebral Palsy Association. He put on fund-raising events and among attendees he rounded up were more former champions: Sugar Ray Robinson, Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler, Rocky Graziano, Emile Griffith, Carmen Basilio, Billy Graham, Gus Lesnivich and Abe Attel. Corners slightly rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
