OLAF WIEGHORST 10 wonderful pages of sketches by the master artist. Sketch book signed: "Olaf Weighorst". Signed along right edge of cover. 10 pages (bound) of sketches. 3 pages blank. Pen and ink on paper. 9 x 12. ½ inch separation of cover and pages at right binding, ¼ inch separation of cover and pages at left binding, otherwise fine condition. Olaf Wieghorst (1899-1988), is best known for his poignant paintings of the American West. His work graced calendars and illustrated magazines, and commanded good prices from art collectors. Many of his pieces are on display at the Olaf Wieghorst Museum in El Cajon, near San Diego. Wieghorst was a circus stunt rider in Denmark before emigrating to the US at age 19, and he appeared in two John Wayne movies.

Steve McQueen (1930-1980) played a police detective in the film, portraying him in the stunt-driving role typical of his anti-hero image. McQueen had his first starring film role in The Blob (1958), the same year he began a three-year run as a moody bounty hunter in TV's Wanted: Dead or Alive. McQueen was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for The Sand Pebbles (1966). Among his many other movie hits were The Magnificent Seven (1960), The Great Escape (1963), The Cincinnati Kid (1965) and Papillon (1973). He was married to actress Ali MacGraw from 1973-1977. Rare, signed, sepia-toned photograph of Annie Oakley holding a double-barreled shotgun in a gloved hand. Materials signed by Oakley are extremely rare and desirable! Photograph mount signed "Annie. Oakley.". B/w sepia-toned, 3¾x5½ photo mounted on a 4¼x6½ card with rounded edges. Cabinet card photograph by Baker's Art Gallery, Columbus, Ohio. Oakley (1860-1926, born Phoebe Anne Moses in Darke County, Ohio), was born to a Quaker family and began to shoot rabbits and quail at age nine. Within five years, she was a breadwinner for her family as a markswoman, and, at age 15, she saved her family's farm with income she had earned from shooting game. On August 23, 1876, at age 16, Annie married Frank Butler, a vaudeville performer who became her partner. Annie's self-effacing personality (on and off stage) made her a popular performer. In 1885, the Butlers joined Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show, where Annie was a star for 17 years. The five-foot-tall Oakley got her name "Little Sure Shot" from Sitting Bull and used it in her promotional materials. In 1901, she and her husband decided to retire from public life. However, shooting was in her blood, and the Butlers continued to make appearances around the country.

11x14 sepia photo of Fields in the stage version of his skit, "The Caledonian Express," signed and inscribed to author and publisher Arthur Samuels. Field's inscription includes one of his famous lines from the stage and screen skit: "You'll ha to git oot/o' the compartment." Oversized Photograph inscribed and signed: "To My friend/Arthur -you'll ha to git oot/o' the compartment,/from his friend/Bill Fields/Oct 11 - 1928." Sepia, 11x14. Remarkable studio portrait inscribed to Arthur Samuels, who was involved with the publishing of "Ladies Home Journal" and authored Poppy. Half-view left profile by Hal Phype. Fields has quoted one of his lines from the Earl Carroll's Vanities sketch "The Caledonian Express" (1928), in which the legendary comedian played four Scottish characters trying to remove an uninvited guest from a train compartment. Fields repeated the skit in the film Follow the Boys (1945), but that time played the intruder. Samuels' Poppy made Fields a Broadway star in 1923, and he reprised the role in two film versions. Surface creases at upper right corner with fraying at that corner, else fine, handsome and rare.

ANNIE "LITTLE SURE SHOT" OAKLEY - AUTOGRAPH - HFSID 285962

Her rare signature on a 4x2½ card, matted and then attached to an 11x16 reproduction of a poster publicizing her show Signature: "Annie Oakley", 4x2½ card. Affixed to a 4¼x2¾ matte which in turn is affixed to a larger matte 11¼x16, which features a reproduction of a poster publicizing her appearance. Sharpshooter Annie Oakley (1860-1926) toured vaudeville circuits and circuses with her husband, Frank Butler, whom she married in 1876 when she was 16. She starred in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show from 1885-1902. Oakley was called "Little Sure Shot" because she was only five feet tall. On this poster, with six illustrations of her in action, she is called "the peerless wing and rifle shot". Oakley's life story was told in Irving Berlin's 1946 musical, Annie Get Your Gun, currently enjoying a successful revival on Broadway. Her signature is rare in any form. Signature slightly lifted from the matte at its lower edge. Fine condition.

Pictured on top of her show horse, the famed dead-eye shoots a bullet straight through the heart on this 1919 signed exhibition card. Exhibition cards, as such, where Oakley hit her mark dead center were given away to the sharp-shooter's lucky fans. Accompanied by an unsigned publicity photo with Oakley posing with her rifle. Extremely Rare! Photograph Signed: "Annie Oakley/June19--1919", 4½x2 card. Accompanied by a 4¼x6 sepia photo of the markswoman holding her rifle, standing on the fabric of a teepee. The "sure shot" used exhibition cards to demonstrate her shooting prowess by taking aim from 30 paces away and splitting the card dead center. This particular card, pierced with a .22 caliber bullet through its printed black heart, is nothing short of a perfect example of Oakley's unrivaled skill and precision. Annie Oakley (1860-1926) was born Phoebe Anne Oakley Mozee in Ohio. She was the sixth of eight children. At the age of nine she began to shoot rabbits and quail and was almost a dead shot from the first. Within five years, she was a breadwinner for her family as a markswoman. Title Insurance Application for use by the Title Company in searching the records in connection with the purchase of property at 603 N. Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, California. She has filled in her name, birthplace, address, and occupation. In 1954, Garbo was awarded a Special Academy Award "for her unforgettable screen performances" in films such as Anna Christie, Anna Karenina, Camille and Ninotchka. After four Oscar nominations, she retired in 1941 at the age of 36. A millionaire many times over, Garbo had no need to act, nor any desire to conduct an active social life. Even after her death in 1990, the legend of Garbo was undiminished. To her devotees, she was not so much film legend as film goddess. Lightly creased. Fine condition. Anything signed by the reclusive Garbo is rarely encountered. Framed to an overall size of 32 x 18½.

On verso: "Yours Truly/James Longstreet/July 15 '99" and "Ferdinand W. Peck". Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 40x20. William Frederick Cody earned the name "Buffalo Bill" for killing thousands of buffalo as a hired hunter in 1867 and 1868. Cody had begun his wild west career herding cattle at age nine. Five years later, he became the Pony Express' youngest rider. Throughout the Civil War, Cody worked as a government scout, extracting from life and the West all it had to offer. His western notoriety grew with his adventures, including those during the Sioux War, in which he purportedly fought a duel with Chief Yellow Hand. Cody's theatrical career was launched that same year with his re-enactments of such Indian battles. By 1883, he formed his first Wild West spectacle, becoming a master showman who toured internationally until 1903.

Preparing for his role as "The Great Man" in his last starring role, later titled Never Give a Sucker an Even Break, Fields hires his own writer, to be paid by him, not by the studio. The writer (John T. Neville) has also signed. Documentary Letter Signed: "W. C. Fields", "John T. Neville", 1 page, 8½x11. Universal City, California, 1941 February 22. Neville acknowledges that he has been hired personally by W. C. Fields in connection with Fields' pending movie for Universal Studios, and understands that is to be compensated by Fields, owed nothing by Universal. Fields signs his "approval and consent to the foregoing." Ink note at top left (unknown hand), underlined in red: "The Great Man". W.C. FIELDS (1879-1946) began entertaining as an amusement park juggler at the age of fourteen. He was a vaudeville headliner before he was twenty and toured Europe in 1901, giving a command performance at Buckingham Palace. His Broadway debut in The Ham Tree (1905) was followed by appearances in the Ziegfeld Follies (1915-1921) and in George White's Scandals (1933). Fields starred in Poppy on Broadway (1923) and the next year made his first film, Janice Meredith (1924).

In The Adventures of Superman, Reeves portrayed the character again. Reeves was neither the first nor the last film Superman, of course. Kirk Alyn preceded him, while Christopher Reeve and many others have followed. Reeves was never able to shake off being typecast as Superman; the television show ran until he was 44 years old. His death by gunshot wound on June 16, 1959, was officially ruled a suicide, but suspicions of murder have persisted. Chipped along edges of frame and at corners. FRANCIS DOUBLIER (1878-1948), the first to see moving pictures projected onto a wall, signed and dated this photograph while Vice President of Major Film Laboratories, Inc. of New York. His photographic career began in 1894, when the 16-year-old became associated with brothers AUGUSTE MARIE NICOLAS LUMIÈRE (1862-1954) and LOUIS JEAN LUMIÈRE (1864-1948) and their experimentation with motion picture photography.

Beginning as an extra in 1928, Harlow began her rise to stardom in Howard Hughes' sound production of Hell's Angels in 1930. She starred in The Public Enemy and Platinum Blonde in 1931 and proved her comedic talents in such films as Dinner at Eight (1934) and China Seas (1935). Minor surface creases. Slight smudge at "H". Overall, fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 14¾ x 18½. (1911-1937) American actress Jean Harlow, the daughter of a dentist, eloped at 16 with a young businessman. The newlyweds settled in Los Angeles, where the bride soon found work as an extra in films. In between parts in features she was displayed more prominently in Hal Roach shorts, notably "Double Whoopee" (1928) with Laurel and Hardy. In 1929 she obtained a divorce and committed herself to a film career. Opportunity came with Howard Hughes when she was cast in his 1927 movie "Hell's Angels". After a slow start, she was cast opposite stars like Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable and became a superstar. It is said that this photograph was given to a close friend of 30 years, Vincent Albanese. It was taken at about the same time as the famous 1976 photograph of Sinatra and several Mafia chieftains taken backstage at the Westchester Premier Theatre. That photograph pictured Sinatra with his arms around Marson and Gregory DePalma. Also pictured were Paul Castellano, Carlo Gambino, Joseph Gambino, Aladena Fratianno, Salvatore Spatola and Richard Fusco. Sinatra's connection to the mafia is documented in Kitty Kelley's His Way. In full, with grammatical errors and misspellings: "I realy am ashamed to think that I neglected to write you. and send our sincere regrets to dear Allice. But when I think it all over, I feel that God does things for our own good and the poorer Boy is better off and happier than he was away from his little Wife and Baby. The dear little photo is so cute. I would love to see you all again. Fern is feeling better and is in an office 35oo per week & percentage. And we hope that her Mother will strike oil on her farm. 5 wells on 2 next farms all paying. I havent been well. 5 weeks in N.Y.C. and only got one dress made. We sail in 5 minutes so must see & mail this. Bushels of love to all from both." Annie Oakley (1860-1926) was born Phoebe Anne Oakley Mozee in Ohio. She was the sixth of eight children. At the age of nine she began to shoot rabbits and quail and was almost a dead shot from the first. Within five years, she was a breadwinner for her family as a markswoman.

Fine condition. Best known for playing the "Man of Steel" on film and on television, George Reeves (1914-1959), born George Bessolo, made his film debut in 1939. Reeves played Stuart Tarleton, one of the Scarlett O'Hara's hopeful beaus, in David O. Selznick's Civil War epic, Gone With the Wind. Making an excellent impression in that role, in 1940, Reeves was cast in 17 films, including Knute Rockne, All American, Virginia City, The Fighting 69th, 'Til We Meet Again, Pony Express Days and Meet the Fleet. Shown with his girlfriend, played by Jan Clayton, and her unwelcoming father (Grant Mitchell), Father is a Prince (1940). Reeves' career took a fateful turn when he was cast as Superman/Clark Kent in 1951's Superman and the Mole Men, a role he reprised in the 1953-1957 television series. Reeves' death by gunshot wound on June 16, 1959, was officially ruled a suicide, but suspicions of murder have persisted. Accompanied by PSA/DNA LOA.

Rudolph Valentino (1895-1926) was the great romantic screen idol of the 1920s, the epitome of the "Latin lover." The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse had opened on March 5, 1921, followed by Uncharted Seas on April 21, 1921, and The Conquering Power on July 8, 1921. Camille opened on September 11, 1921 and The Sheik opened on October 30, 1921. He was a very busy actor in 1921. Valentino was a connoisseur of luxury automobiles. Walter E. Dunn personally and secretively began design and development of an automobile referred to as the Dunn Cycle Car around 1914; he built his own two-speed with reverse transmission that weighed a mere 25 lbs.
