Cranks."
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Very Truly Yours/Elliott F. Shepard",
4½x¾ slip. Elliott Fitch Shepard (1833-1895) was a successful Union recruiter
during the Civil War. The 51 st New York Volunteer Regiment was named in his
honor, The Shepard Rifles. In 1868 Shepard married into money,
Margaret Vanderbilt, the daughter of William Henry Vanderbilt. Apparently,
Shepard was not a successful businessman. Neither his newspaper, the New York
Mail and Express (purchased 1888) nor his bank, grandiosely called the Bank of
Banks, prospered. (An anonymous satire sent to the New York Times -
attributed to William Henry Vanderbilt - called Shepard "the Crank of Cranks."
Irregularly trimmed. Vertical fold crosses "li" of signature. Otherwise, fine
condition.
