FRED ZINNEMANN
Black and white candid photograph of Fred Zinnemann strolling on a street signed to a fan.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "For Roy Pitts/with all good wishes/Fred Zinnemann/1968". B/w, 8x10. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso date this photograph as signed on June 6, 1968. Signed two years after the release of A Man For All Seasons, for which Zinnemann won the Oscar for Best Director. Viennese-born director Fred Zinnemann (1907-1997) ranks with Billy Wilder as one of America's two greatest expatriate directors. Arriving in the U.S. in 1929 as a camera man, Zinnemann made "B" movies in the 1940s before hitting the big time with The Search in 1948. He won Best Director Academy Awards for From Here to Eternity (1957) and A Man for All Seasons (1966), and two more for short subjects. He scored additional Oscar nominations for The Search (1948), High Noon (1951), The Nun's Story (1959), The Sundowners (1960) and Julia (1977). Zinnemann's other noteworthy film directing credits include The Member of the Wedding (1952), Oklahoma (1955), Behold a Pale Horse (1964) and The Day of the Jackal (1973). Lightly creased and yellowed at blank margins and corners, minor stains at lower left margin and on verso. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on), one at Zinnemann's shirt. Overall, fine condition.
