GERTRUDE NIESEN
She signs an autograph note (to chanteuse Hildegarde): "You never looked lovelier - or sounded better."
Autograph Note signed: "Gertrude Niesen", 9½x2¼. No place, no date. In full: "You never looked lovelier - or sounded better." Also signed on verso (dated Aug. 23, n.y., by an unknown hand): "Mrs. Edna Skinner - So, so nice to see you!", "Tod Dorsey [?] Perfectly Charming Hildegarde", "Frank Liberman - Viva Hildegarde" and "Per Liberman - Always nice to catch up with you." Big band and cabaret singer GERTRUDE NIESEN (1911-1975) performed pop standards by all the great songwriters of her era (1930s-1950s). Her stage performances included the lead in the Broadway musical Follow the Girls (1944-1946). Two of her albums have recently been re-released: My Best Wishes (1938) and I Wanna Get Married (1945). FRANK LIBERMAN (b. 1904) was a veteran Hollywood publicist whose clients included Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller and David Janssen. He retired in 2001. His memoir, The Greats and Ingrates, relates many inside stories about show business personalities. These notes were dedicated to cabaret singer and international recording star Hildegarde Sell (1906-2005), better known simply as "the Incomparable Hildegarde." Irregularly trimmed. Light stain touches four letters of Niesen's note. Otherwise, fine condition.
