Photograph inscribed and signed (in French): "Pour Monsieur Cornelius/Greenaway/Tres sympathetiquement//Jean Rostand". B/w 4x6½. Jean Rostand (1894-1977) was a French experimental biologist, a popular and scholarly science writer, and a philosopher. He was active in political causes, especially against nuclear proliferation and capital punishment. He was made a member of the prestigious French Academy in 1959, and is shown here wearing the green habit of the Academy. Rostand wrote his first book, The Return of the Poor, in 1919, and his last, The Hopes and Worries of Man, 40 years later. Edges and corners lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
