JOHN HABBERTON
Handwritten sentiment of the popular 19th century author
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours Truly/John Haberton",
3¾x2¼. John Haberton (1842-1921), originally a typesetter for Harper
& Brothers before and after his service in the Union Army, served as
literary editor of several periodicals, between 1874 and 1897, including
the Christian Union, the New York Herald and the Illustrated
American. In 1876 he published his first novel, Helen's Babies, a
humorous story appealing to both older children and adults; it became a surprise
best seller. Haberton wrote many more novels, many set in early California,
as well as a Life of George Washington (1883) and a successful play,
Deacon Crankett (1980). His work drew favorable comment from Rudyard
Kipling, and later George Orwell. Toned. Corners slightly worn. Pencil notes
(unknown hand) on verso. Faint stain above 'Yours' in signature. Otherwise, fine
condition.
