KERSTIN THORBORG
Signature of the Swedish contralto on a postcard postmarked in 1946. Extremely rare!
Postcard signed: "Kerstin Thorborg", in black ink. 5½x3¼. Unknown hand addresses the postcard to S. Lloyd, Cresson, Pennsylvania. Postmarked, New York City, New York, April 8, 1946. In fear of the rise of Nazism in Europe, Thorborg escaped to the United States in 1938, and did not return to her native Sweden until 1950. Circa 1946. Sweden's most beloved operatic contralto Kerstin Thorborg (1896-1970) is praised for her dramatic Wagnerian performances. Most active from 1930 to 1950, Thorborg was mentored by Bruno Walter who trained her to become a versatile singer. With the range to take on mezzo-soprano roles, Thorborg also played Venus, Kundry, Fricka, Waltraute and Magdalena. Of all her performances, she is best remembered as Brangäne, from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Toned. Slightly soiled. Corners slightly rounded and creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) in lower margin. Processing mailing stamps touch the top of signature (still legible). Light ink smudge at "ri" and moisture defect at "g" (still legible). Otherwise, fine condition.
