Books have been written on the subject. In my opinion, acting is a search for truth - including emotional truth. Beginning actors sometimes confuse what the audience feels with what the character feels. When actors act out what the audience should feel they become sentimental & untruthful. Deep true emotion is not always accompanied by tears - nor are easy tears a sign of fine communicative acting. As one of the best teachers, Robert Lewis, said - "If acting were crying, my aunt Rivka would be Duse." If your students are really interested, they might look up Uta Hagen's book - Respect For Acting. Don't over-theorize. Don't overcomplicate. Try to see and communicate the truth. It only takes a lifetime. Sincerely yours." Sada Thompson (1927-2011) won an Obie for The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds and then a Tony for Twigs (1972), the latter for her performance as four different women on four 1-act plays. She won three Golden Globes and an Emmy as Kate Lawrence in the series Family (1975-1980) and was nominated for another Emmy for the TV movie Indictment: the McMartin Trial (1995). Lightly creased.
