CEDRIC HARDWICKE
Typed letter from the British Actor, responding to an actor who is interested in appearing in one of his plays.
Typed letter signed: "Cedric Hardwicke", 1p, 7¼x10¼. R.K.O. Studios, Hollywood, California, 1940 December 16. To Joseph Towes, New York City. In full: "In reply to your letter referring to production of 'CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA', I am sorry to tell you that I am not producing this play at present and, therefore, there is nothing I can do for you in this connection. However, should I decide to produce the play later on, I will certainly remember you when casting. I am glad you found my article in THEATRE ARTS interesting and I think your record of having played nearly one hundred parts at the age of twenty-eight is splendid, though it does tend to refute my remarks on 'limited opportunities for the young American actor'. My very best wishes for your success." Sir Cedric Hardwicke's varied roles include Captain Andy in the London production of the musical Show Boat, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge in the film Wilson, a drunken gangland doctor in Baby Face Nelson and Pharaoh Sethi in The Ten Commandments. Hardwicke directed and starred as Julius Caesar in Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra on Broadway at the National (now Nederlander) Theatre for 151 performances from December 21, 1949 to April 29, 1950. Folds, vertical fold touches "d" in Cedric. Fine condition.
