The boxer and physical fitness trainer of the early 1900s signs her name on this card
Autograph sentiment signed: "Sincerely Yours/Vera Roehm/Nov 4-1917" in black ink. 5x2¼. Vera Roehm was an athlete and advocate for women's self-defense in the early 1900s. She studied at the Peabody Institute, becoming a trained nurse. While apprenticing she discovered the benefits of "physical culture" and became an expert boxer. Roehm believed that women should stay physically fit, more so than was ever expected of them and that learning boxing would make them less vulnerable for being attacked. She appeared in a few stage revues including "The Passing Show of 1916", "Doing Our Bit" (1917-1918), and "The Century Review" (1920-1921) as well as a play called "The Melting of Molly". By 1922 she was marketing herself as a physical culturist and stage beauty, advertising excercise regimes that took only 10-15 minutes a day. Toned. Corners rounded. Water damage on top edge and bottom right corner. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
