WESLEY ADDY and CELESTE HOLM
The prominent acting couple send Christmas letter to Broadway
producer Charles Forsythe, discussing the upcoming season
Autograph letter signed: "Wes" in blue ink and
"Celeste" in black ink. 1 page, 9x6 flat, written inside Christmas card.
Addressed to Broadway stage producer Charles Forsythe. In full (in Addy's
hand): "Dear Charles - We missed seeing Miss Campbell that afternoon and
its good to have word that we were able to reach her with our messages. Thank
you so much for making it possible. We played Lacmia a few weeks ago and heard
that that theatre was not being released for next summer & hope there are
not many more. We hope the Broadway renaissance will spread by next year! With
greetings of the season and best wishes for the coming year". WESLEY ADDY
(1913-1996) was featured on the daytime drama The Edge of
Night in the 1950s. A generation later, he could be seen on TV in the
Ryan's Hope and Loving. His character roles in
films, beginning in the 1950s, included What Ever Happened to Baby
Jane (1962), Network (1976) and The Verdict
(1982). He was married to Celeste Holm from 1961 until his death. In 1943,
Rodgers and Hammerstein cast CELESTE HOLM (1917-2012) as soubrette Ado
Annie in Oklahoma!; both the production itself and Annie's show-stopping
song "I Cain't Say No" affirmed Holm's future stardom. She was cast by her
studio, 20th Century-Fox, in the role of the love-starved fashion editor in the
prestige feature Gentlemen's Agreement (1947), for which she won an
Academy Award. The important role of Bette Davis' understanding friend in
another Oscar-winner, All About Eve (1950), has immortalized Holm amongst
the film cultists. Always choosy about her roles, she remained active in the
1980s and 1990s whenever a good part struck her fancy. Toned. Corners rounded.
Light surface creases. Stain from paper clip on verso. Slightly torn on front.
Otherwise, fine condition.
