WILLIAM DEAN HOWELLS
William Dean Howells sends an autograph letter saying that he will be
glad to receive some books.
Autograph Letter Signed: "W.D. Howells", 1p, 4½4¾. New
York, New York, 1888 November 11. To "Dear Mr. Nimes [?}. In full:
"If you have some books for me I shall be glad to receive them. Yours
sincerely." In 1860, HOWELLS (1837-1920) published a campaign
biography, Life of Lincoln, and was rewarded by being named U.S.
Consul in Venice, Italy (1861-1865). As editor of the "Atlantic Monthly"
(1871-1881), Howells espoused realism over romanticism in literature and
promoted such writers as Mark Twain, Henry James, Bret Harte, Emily Dickinson
and Stephen Crane. His own work included poetry, criticism and several
novels, the best known of which was The Rise of Silas Lapham
(1875). His later books examined social issues such as race relations and
the condition of labor and of women. Light ½x½-inch stain at upper left corner.
Otherwise, fine condition.
