BUSBY BERKELEY
He signs acceptance of an advance from M-G-M in 1953
Document Signed: "Busby Berkeley", 1 page, 8½x11.Culver City, California, 1953 August 11. Berkeley acknowledges concurrent receipt of a check for $1,600 from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, to be considered a loan repayable on demand. Berkeley also agrees that M-G-M may deduct this sum from sums payable to Berkeley under any contract with them. (Since there is no mention of accruing interest, this might better be considered a salary advance.) Two M-G-M films choreographed by Busby Berkeley were released in 1953: Small Town Girl, with Ann Miller and Bobby Van as featured dancers; and Easy to Live, with Esther Williams in the water. Director and choreographer Busby Berkeley (1895-1976) is famed for his spectacular musical production numbers, featuring scores of chorus girls. Beginning with hit Broadway musicals in the 1920s, Berkeley moved to films with the advent of sound, producing hit musical films like 42nd Street (1933). When not choreographing and directing musical extravaganzas, he proved a skilled director of serious dramas like They Made Me a Criminal (1939). At age 75, he came out of retirement to direct a Broadway revival of No No Nanette. File holes at upper margin. Staple holes at upper left corner. Fine condition.
