Thank you note written by Edward Everett Hale in Roxbury Massachusetts in
1902, one year before he became Chaplain of the U. S. Senate
Autograph letter signed "Edward E Hale". 1 page, 3½x5½, 1 sheet
folded. Roxbury, Massachusetts, Feb. 28, 1902. In full: "Dear
Miss Kimball : I thank you indeed for your note:- and for the story of the Forty
Boys- You did not tell me where you heard me. Are you a New England Kimball?
Always yours". Hale (1822-1909, born in Boston, Massachusetts) was
Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain
of the U. S. Senate from 1903 to his death. Hale, a prolific author of both
history and popular fiction, is best remember today for his patriotic tale
Man Without a Country (1863). Lightly toned, soiled, stained, foxed
and creased. Body of letter, but not signature, has bled and smeared in places,
but is legible. Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition.
