HENRY E. HUNTINGTON
$7.50 voucher for an employee's travelling expenses, signed by California railroad executive Henry E. Huntington
Document signed: "HE Huntington" on verso as President of the Pacific Electric Railway Co., 2p, front and verso, 8¼x6¾. Los Angeles, California, 1904 October 18. Pacific Electric Railway Co. Voucher No. 12329, payable to J. McMillan. for $7.50 "For traveling and incidental expenses incurred during the month of September, 1904, in the performance of the duties of Traffic Manager". Also signed by five representatives of the Pacific Electric Railway Co., including an auditor, on front. The nephew of railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington, Huntington (1850-1927) ultimately held a number of executive positions with several railroads and was instrumental in promoting the development of electric railways and utilities in Los Angeles, beginning with his first railroad line in 1902. The Pacific Electric Railway Co. was one of eight separate companies that merged into a company of the same name in August 1911. The conglomerate, developed by Huntington, was a standard gauge interurban system that was able to compete successfully with steam railroad lines to carry passengers and freight. Lightly soiled. Cancellation holes touch "Hu" of "Huntington". Print shows through at Huntington's signature, which remains fully legible. Overall, fine condition.
