LUISA TETRAZZINI
The soprano coloratura who debuted in the United States in 1904 signed this black and white 6½x8¼ magazine photograph in ink
Magazine Photograph signed: "Souvenir from/ Luisa Tetrazzini/ Dec 14 - 33." B/w, 6½x8¼ overall, image 4x6½ (one surface). December 14, 1933. Name imprinted at lower margin. Signed on verso of a page for a program of Tetrazzini's Farewell Tour. The performance, presented by Harold Holt, also featured Joseph Hislop and Piatigorsky. Ivor Newton was at the piano. Italian opera star Luisa Tetrazzini (1871-1940) made her debut in Florence in 1890, debuted in the U.S. in 1904 and at Covent Garden in 1907. She had a highly polished mastery of her art as a coloratura soprano, with a sensational command of the most difficult and florid music. She was also witty and good-natured, with a flair for fun that made her splendid in comedic roles. Tetrazzini, who sang notably in Rigoletto and La Traviata, was the inspiration for Chicken Tetrazzini, created by Chef George Auguste Escoffier of The Savoy in London. Lightly creased and soiled, minor stains at upper blank margin on front and verso. Two ¼-inch and one ½-inch tears at upper blank margin. Irregular right edge from removal from bound program. Otherwise, fine condition.
