Bailey and Brown sign a 4½x3¾ pink album leaf
Autograph Sentiment Signed: "My best/Pearl Bailey" and,
on verso, "Pamela/Brown", 4½x3¾ album leaf. Dated in ink (unknown
hand): "26-6-48." at lower right margins of both sides. PEARL BAILEY
(1918-1990), a jazz singer and Broadway star, made her Broadway debut in 1946 in
the musical St. Louis Woman; her performance resulted in an award for
most promising newcomer. She won a Special Tony Award in 1968. Bailey
appeared in numerous films, including Carmen Jones, St. Louis
Blues and Porgy and Bess. She is perhaps best known for her sultry
jazz renditions, having both started and ended her career in nightclubs.
Her early days were spent singing in cafes, theaters, and nightclubs in the
Northeast, with an occasional stint as a singer with a big band, such as
Count Basie's orchestra. In the 1960s, Bailey returned to nightclub singing
and appeared frequently on television; one of her most notable appearances was
on the 1966 special Carol Channing and Pearl Bailey on Broadway.Bailey was named to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1976 and
awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1988. British actress PAMELA BROWN
(1917-1975), who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, made her stage
debut in 1936 and appeared in a variety of roles with the Old Vic company before
making her Broadway debut in 1947 in The Importance of Being
Earnest. In 1948, the year of her signature, she won a Tony Award as
part of the cast, which won for Outstanding Foreign Company. Brown, who made her
screen debut in 1942, appeared in a number of feature films, including Lust
for Life (1956), Cleopatra (1963), Becket (1964) and A
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) and made-for-TV movies
and acted in a number of early TV anthologies. Lightly soiled, show through of
