PETE SEEGER
Short letter by the folk singer, agreeing to an appearance "later this winter"
Autograph Letter signed: "Pete Seeger", 1 page, 5x7. New York, N.Y., undated. On personal letterhead to "Dear Michael Watson", in full: "Some Wednesday later this winter I'd be glad to come. How about February? Hastily". Pete Seeger (1919-2014) was the dean of American folk singers, his activist words and music influencing generations of performers, especially the politically conscious folk singers popular in the 1960s. Seeger rearranged an old African-American spiritual into what became "We Shall Overcome," the anthem of the Civil Rights movement, and other songs he has written and recorded include "If I Had a Hammer", "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" and "Turn, Turn Turn" (a Biblical adaptation). Seeger's foes have included the House Un-American Activities Committee, but his friends number Woody Guthrie, Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez. He continued to play until his later years, earning a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album in 1996, and in 2012 authored his autobiography Pete Seeger: His Life in His Own Words. Ink note (unknown hand) at top. Normal mailing fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
