VRONSKY AND BABIN (VITYA VRONSKY and VICTOR BABIN)
Both inscribe an image from one of their dual piano
performances
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Mrs. A. Black,
sincerely/from/Victor Babin", "Vitya Vronsky". Sepia, 10x8. Dated in right
margin by Babin: "11/7/1934". VICTOR BABIN (1908-1972) met
and married fellow Russian pianist VITYA VRONSKY (1909-1992) while both
were music students in Berlin. Together they formed what Newsweek called
"the most brilliant two-piano team of our generation." They toured widely
in Europe and the Americas, giving an estimated 1,200 concerts in North
America alone, despite devoting World War II to war work. Babin and Vronsky
were close friends of composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, recording many of
his works. Babin also arranged piano solos and duets, and composed some of
his own. From 1961, he was Director of the Cleveland Institute of Music,
also teaching there with Vronsky, who continued to teach there after her death.
Lightly toned around edges. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise,
fine condition.
