NIGEL BRUCE
Actor Nigel Bruce wrote this letter from Beverly Hills, California in
1938. It accompanied several photos (not included) and a list of his movies that
he sent to an autograph hunter.
Autograph letter signed "Nigel Bruce". 1 page, 6x8. Beverly
Hills, California, 1938 May 7. To Mr. Beesman(?). In full: "at Mr.
Schwab's suggestion I am enclosing a couple of photograph (sic) and a
short Biography of the list of stage Plays & films I have taken part in. For
particulars of the Parts see 'Whos (sic) Who in the Theatre'. (English
Edition) Yours sincerely". Photographs not present, but accompanied by a
handwritten list of Bruce's films, 1½p, 6x8, front and verso. Headed:
"Screen". Bruce lists his films "In England", including
Lord Camber's Ladies, I Was a Spy, The Lady is
Willing, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Thunder in the
City, and "In U.S.A. (Hollywood)", including Coming Out
Party, Murder in Trinidad, Springtime for Henry,
Treasure Island, Becky Sharp, She,
Under Two Flags, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine and
The Charge of the Light Brigade, on the front side. On verso,
he has added five films, including Follow Your Heart and The
Last of Mrs. Cheyney. Bruce has also dated his entries
(1932-1935) and marked some with an asterisk (bolded above). On
verso, he has explained: "* = Best known films &/parts played".
He has also added: "and now making 'Suez'". In 1938, the year
he wrote this letter, Mexican-born British actor Bruce (1895-1953)
appeared in Suez and Kidnapped. The following year, Bruce
would star in two films, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The
Hound of the Baskervilles, in the role for which he is best known: Dr.
Watson to close friend Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes (in 14 films and
scores of radio programs). Bruce's other later films include Rebecca
(1940) and Suspicion (1941), both directed by British-born director
Alfred Hitchcock, Lassie Come Home (1943), Frenchman's Creek
(1944), The Corn is Green (1945) and Bwana Devil (1952). List is
lightly shaded on lower margin on verso. Fine condition.
