RICHARD E. BYRD and JOHN GARLAND POLLARD. Commemorative Envelope signed: "RE Byrd" and "Jno Garland Pollard" as Governor of Virginia, 6½x3¾. Envelope commemorating The Visit and Lecture of Rear-Adm. R.E. Byrd at The Mosque, Richmond, Virginia, March 17, 1931, three 2-cent General Von Stueben stamps affixed, postmarked Richmond, VA, March 17, 1931. Addressed in ink (unknown hand) to a collector in Glen Allen, Virginia. Signed the year after polar explorer RICHARD E. BYRD (1888-1957) has returned from his first (1928-1930) expedition to Antarctica, during which (November 1929) he had become the first man to fly over both poles. Byrd, who had been promoted to Admiral after the Antarctic expedition, had earlier (May 9, 1926) flown over the North Pole with Floyd Bennett, for which he was promoted to Commander and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Two years after he gave this lecture, Byrd would return to Antarctica on his second expedition (1933-1935), during which he would broadcast from the "Little America" base over CBS radio, depart for the Advance Base to spend the winter alone (March 1934) and be rescued from the Advance Base (August 1934) before returning to the U.S. in 1935. Democrat JOHN GARLAND POLLARD (1871-1937) was Governor of Virginia from 1930-1934. Lightly creased, slightly worn at edges. Verso is lightly soiled with glue stains (light show through to front). Overall, fine condition.
