The bandleader's handwritten note on an album leaf
Autograph Note signed: "Beverly/Hello, there./Stan Kenton",
5½x4½ album leaf. Originally a pianist in dance bands of the 1930s, STAN
KENTON (1911-1979) formed his own orchestra in 1941, and began displaying
his talents as a band leader and arranger. His theme song was "Artistry in
Rhythm". Before long, his "progressive jazz" was scoring record and radio
hits, especially after vocalist June Christie joined his band. Kenton
remained a creative force in the industry long after most of the big bands had
broken up, winning Grammy awards in 1962 and 1963 and experimenting with
blends of jazz and classical music (Kenton Plays Wagner) and unusual
rhythms (Adventures in Time). Left edge frayed from binding. Creased.
