The German classical pianist signs a 5½x3½ picture postcard of a
pastoral scene.
Picture Postcard signed: "Wilhelm Backhaus". Color, 5½x3½.
German classical pianist Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) was particularly
known for his interpretations of Beethoven and Brahms. Also praised as a
chamber musician, he was one of the first musicians to appreciate the importance
of recording (from 1908). His records included almost the entirety of
Beethoven's work. Although a Swiss citizen from 1930, Backhaus was
outspoken in his support for Adolf Hitler, and was an honored guest at a
Nazi Nuremberg Rally. Backhaus retained his playing skill into his advanced
years, performing five Beethoven sonatas at a 1954 recital in Carnegie Hall.
He died while preparing for yet another concert in the Austrian town of Villach.
