SHORTY SHEROCK
Youthful promotional photograph of the trumpet player while he played for Jimmy Dorsey's orchestra, signs his name in blue ink
Inscribed printed photograph signed: "To Charlie/ Best Wishes/ Shorty Sherock" in blue ink. B/w, 8x10. Shorty Sherock (1915-1980) was a prominent swing jazz trumpeter whose career began in the 1930s and lasted almost thirty years. After attending the Illinois Military Academy, Sherock became a trumpet soloist for Jimmy Dorsey's orchestra from 1937 to 1939, and went on to perform with Gene Krupa's orchestra alongside saxophonist Sam Donahue. Sherock performed as the featured soloist in the famed Jazz at the Philharmonic in 1944 which also included artists such as Nat King Col and Les Paul. In the 1950s and 60s, as a member of the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, he appeared on many famed albums including Dean Martin's "This Time "I'm Swingin'" (1960), Ella Fitzgerald's "Get Happy!" (1959), "Ella Swings Gently with Nelson" (1962) and "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Songbook" (1964). Sherock also performed with Nelson for Frank Sinatra's "Sinatra Sings Days of Wine and Roses, Moon River, and Other Academy Award Winners" (1964). Sherock later spent his time as a studio musician based in Los Angeles. Slightly toned. Light surface creases. Corners creased. Pencil notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
